Alliance Rehabilitation 

Alliance Rehabilitation is one of the largest interdisciplinary health teams in North Queensland.

Alliance Rehabilitation travels to Charters Towers on a semi-regular basis as part of our proactive commitment to the community. Our team currently visits every fortnight, with the practitioners of our outreach team chosen before each visit to meet community need. Alliance Rehabilitation provide the following services to Charters Towers;

Physiotherapy services

Take a step towards recovery

Our Physiotherapy team offers intensive and individualised treatment programmes for participants with a variety of conditions including neurological and orthopaedic movement disorders. Rehabilitation can be undertaken individually or as part of a group to support long-term goals of safe balance, mobility, strength, and function assisting with a smooth transition back to home and community.

AHPRA Registered

Physiotherapists at Alliance Rehabilitation are registered with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA), the national accreditation body. AHPRA members are regulated to ensure clinicians maintain current practice that is supported by the latest evidence-based practice.

Services provided by Physiotherapists include:

  • Assessment and treatment of disorders affecting functional movement as a result of neurological (e.g. stroke, spinal cord injury, Parkinson’s Disease) or orthopaedic (e.g. total hip replacements, fractures, osteoarthritis) conditions. This includes muscle weakness and atrophy, impaired mobility, balance, and coordination, falls risk, poor endurance and cardiovascular fitness, and pain.

  • Gait training and standing programs in order to prepare for walking, specifically working on balance, lower extremity orthotics, artificial limb fitting and training, muscle re-education and motor control.

  • Assessment and provision of mobility and functional equipment such as walkers, walking sticks, tilt tables and standing frames and wheelchairs for participants who require assistance to safely move around in their home and/or the community.

  • Physiotherapy offers services to optimise the individuals’ capacity for safe and functional movement within the home and community.

  • Education and training of family and carers to support good habits and rehabilitation strategies at home, especially with home programs, which is a large key to recovery. This can include bed mobility and transfer training, and wheelchair mobility.

  • Contribution to admission and discharge planning as part of the Alliance Rehabilitation team to ensure a holistic approach during intensive treatment, and ongoing support and continuity when services cease.

Occupational Therapy Services

Assessment and intervention

Occupation isn’t just what you do for work, it is the meaningful activities you perform in your everyday life such as cooking, getting to the shops or dressing. An OT can work with you to identify your strengths and difficulties in these areas and will help you to devise practical solutions.

Alliance Rehabilitation offers specialist rehabilitation and capacity building occupational therapy assessment and intervention plans for adults. Our occupational therapists are experienced in working with people who have neurological conditions such as acquired brain injury, spinal cord injury, stroke, cerebral palsy, progressive neurological conditions, orthopaedic conditions and amputation.

Our goal is to help you to achieve your goal! We provide a client-centred approach to therapy with an aim to maximise your engagement in meaningful activities, to enhance your quality of life.

Occupational therapists can assist with:

  • Community participation and leisure therapy including fishing, cooking, bowling, shopping and working with tools

  • Task Analysis for assessment and re-training of everyday living skills like using cutlery and dressing, household tasks such as cooking and cleaning, and vocational skills including handwriting and typing

  • Upper limb (arm and hand) rehabilitation including assessment and intervention. Intervention may include individual sessions, group-based sessions, functional electrical stimulation, sensory re-training and robotic assisted upper limb therapy using Tyromotion.

  • Bespoke functional splint fabrication, modified constraint induced movement therapy and outcome assessment for hypertonicity treatment.

  • Analysis of cognitive / thinking skills such as attention, memory, planning, organisation and development of strategies to assist with changes in these skills

  • Assessment of postural management including seating assessment and recommendations regarding pressure care. This includes recommendation of Assistive Technology such as seating systems, pressure cushions, pressure relieving mattresses, backrests, hoists and slings.

  • Fatigue management

  • Home modification assessment and recommendations to promote your safety and independence

  • Identification, trialling and recommendations for equipment, environmental adaptations and assistive technology.

  • Driving assessment and vehicle modifications

Speech and Language Therapy

Tailored Support

Alliance Rehabilitation’s Speech Pathology team provides tailored rehabilitation and support for participants with acquired or developmental speech, language, cognitive, voice and/or swallowing problems. Rehabilitation and support may be delivered individually or in a group, with the goal of optimising communication and swallowing skills for life.

 

Accredited Services

The speech pathologists at Alliance Rehabilitation are registered with Speech Pathology Australia (SPA), the national accreditation body. SPA regulates members to ensure they are keeping up to date with latest evidence based practice.

Our Services include

  • Assessment and rehabilitation of disorders affecting communication and swallowing including language difficulties (aphasia), motor speech disorders (apraxia and dysarthria) and voice disorders (dysphonia). These disorders may result following stroke or other medical conditions. We offer therapy and rehabilitation services to maximise a person’s ability to communicate functionally within the hospital and home settings.

  • Assessment and provision of alternative and augmentative communication systems for patients who are unable to communicate their wants and needs verbally. Using technology to support communication and therapy.

  • Education of family and carers about communication and swallowing disorders as communication is an integral of part of family life.

  • Contribution to discharge planning as part of the Alliance Rehabilitation team.

Psychology Services

How we can help

It can often be difficult adjusting to a new situation and Psychology services at Alliance Rehabilitation aim to improve a person’s quality of life by focusing on factors that contribute to one’s wellness and recovery.

Through a client-centred approach to therapy our psychologists help to maximise your engagement in meaningful activities, enhance your quality of life and help you achieve your goals.

We address a range of concerns such as behavioural or emotional , trauma, crisis, adjustment, grief and loss, family conflicts, relationship issues, substance abuse, learning difficulties, attachment issues and social skills for individuals with a variety of conditions. These include people who experience mood and anxiety disorders, who have neurological conditions such as acquired and traumatic brain injury, adjustment disorders, eating disorders and developmental difficulties.

Psychologists work interprofessionally within the Alliance Rehabilitation team to ensure participants receive a holistic approach during their intensive treatment.
